Speedfreak Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 My local HL has had a bunch of Model Master/Testors paints on clearence for $2.50 a can so I won't need any paint for a while Besides the Model Master paints I got several cans of Model Master lacquer primers that came in three different varieties. I got; 1) Model Master, 'Custom Lacquer System' primer Gray & White 2) Model Master, 'sandable primer' Gray & White 3) Model Master 'Super Fine' primer Gray & White Is this good/bad stuff? How does it compare to 'automotive' lacquer primer(s)? Thanks!
Chillyb1 Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 In my experience, that stuff is the worst primer on the face of the Earth! I was not aware that there were three varieties, and maybe the super fine is better. I bought several cans of lacquer white primer (not all at once but serially because they were cheap and I wanted them to work) and they were uniformly terrible. They came out unevenly and heavily and in cottage-cheese consistency. Awful BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH. I started a thread either here or on Scale Auto's forum about it and many a modeler chimed in with similar tales, including Bob Downie whose experience and expertise I trust. Good luck with that stuff.
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 How does it compare to 'automotive' lacquer primer(s)? Well, for one thing, it costs a lot more for a lot less. For another thing, automotive lacquer primers CAN attack and slightly craze the surfaces of SOME kit plastics. I'm ASSUMING this isn't an issue with Testors made-for-models stuff...but by the same token, automotive lacquer primer is probably a lot better at resisting "hot" topcoats like Duplicolor automotive lacquers.
Speedfreak Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Well, I got it 'cause it was cheap, $2.50 a can. Maybe the 'super fine' stuff at least will be good. Bill, thanks for the valued info and for following my posts/threads, I need all the help I can get! Actually, I'm getting pretty close on the '41 Willy's Street Rod. It should be finished shortly. I also have A '68 GTO Street Machine and now '71 Duster on the bench. You think if I started a 'forth' kit it might help my progress?
Deathgoblin Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I like it. If I can't get Duplicolor primers, that's what I use. And it works fine under the Duplicolor paints as well.
Speedfreak Posted November 20, 2013 Author Posted November 20, 2013 Thanks Brian. I'll have to try them and see. For the money I thought I should at least try them.
scalenut Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I picked up a few cans on clearance a while back , and they sprayed nice and thin , no problems at all
ctoelle Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I almost exclusively use Tamiya primers, both the white and light grey. They are very fine, spray on evenly, and sand nicely Hobby Lobby now carries them, in the tall can. I always use the 40% off coupon, so they cost about $7
High octane Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I've never had a problem with Testors Model Master primers and have used them several times. I also like the Tamiya primers as they are very thin. When I paint a body, I try to get away with as little paint as I can, so not to cover up the details. That means thin primer, less coats of color, and enough clear coats so that I can wet sand (polish) it out.
cobramike Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 I went to the local HL today to get some Tamiya Primer, they had one can of fine light. I liked to had a freaking heart attack, they wanted $10.99 for that can. Needless to say, I left there thinking that I need to find a different place to buy at. Checked Amazon when I got home and they want $11.59. What the hell has gone wrong in this world that a hobbyist has to pay through the nose for that stuff? Has the Saudi's also got control of the market for hobby primer? Looks like I'm going to get some cheap stuff from my ACE hardware store. Someone that cannot be controlled by the Chinese, and Saudi's! It's a sad day indeed!
Bigfordguy Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Up here in London Ontario, Canada one of the hobby stores has it for $13.99(Tamiya primer)
my80malibu Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I have used Citadel scull white. Primer its under $20 dollars and in a large can. Still expensive but you maybe get a little more

Comes to 'bout $7 with tax...and for the best primer money can buy, not bad...
Speedfreak Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 How much is a can of Plastikote Primer?
charlie8575 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 How much is a can of Plastikote Primer? I generally can get mine for about $7 at CarQuest stores. Charlie Larkin
