oldscool Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Got started on mine after seeing Randy B's thread.Glued the major engine parts together after having difficulties with the Testors liquid cement being ineffective on the plastic. It didn't melt the plastic like it normally does and caused cracks to appear in a couple of places. I ended up using Testors in the black bottle with the hypodermic type tip and it seems to work OK. If you look closely at the pic you can see cracks in the part of the block that the timing cover mounts to. Randy B pointed out that there is no alternator bracket. Rather than scratch one like he did, I will use one from another kit. The one on the left is from the RB engine in the Hemi Dart kit and the one on the right is from the RB engine in the 68 Charger kit. I'm liking the one on the left myself. It may not be perfect but it looks better than the supplied part in the Cuda kit. What is interesting is that Revell chose to tool yet another iteration of the 426 Hemi. Between all of their 1/25 Mopar kits I count at least three different variations of Hemi as well as three different RB toolings.
PappyD340 Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Good start Gerald, I'm inclined to agree with you on the alternator, I really like Plastruct plastic weld for bare plastic, works great for me!!
FASTBACK340 Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I've had good luck with Ambroid Pro Weld. But be careful, it's some harsh stuff. And as for the build, whats your plan? Color combo, stock or? I have to wait until X-mas for mine.....

Skypower Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Hope to get that kit for Christmas also. Sounds like you got a good plan going.
RandyB. Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Glad to see you got started Gerald. What colour are you planning on painting it? Good luck with the build!
oldscool Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 Glad to see you got started Gerald. What colour are you planning on painting it? Good luck with the build! I'm planning on a bright red Randy. Things are going kinda slow right now because weather won't permit outdoor painting but I did get the engine brush painted with good old Testors enamel. While things are stalled I decided to play around with some different engines as this was brought up on the review thread. Here is the 1/24 small block from the Challenger T/A kit for anyone that is interested. It looks a little large but I wanted to try it because a few people thought the 1/25 small blocks looked too small. Also found that it won't go back far enough because it hits the front edge of the floor pan.
oldscool Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) I made a little more progress today. The engine is almost done. And here it is with the 383 from the Hemi Dart kit that sacrificed its alternator. Notice that the carb on the 383 is a better rendition of a Carter AVS than the lumps in the Cuda kit. I'm thinking about using two of the earlier carbs on the Hemi since I haven't glued them on yet. In some ways I think Revell has gone backwards with the Cuda engine although the trans and exhaust manifolds are beautifully done. The earlier kit has better carbs, better distributor with vacuum advance, and better alternator with brackets. I am planning to use Tamiya bright red for the color so as a test I painted the underside of both hoods. Shaker hood is paint over bare plastic. "Raisin Bran" hood is over Tamiya gray primer(don't have any white primer ). Big difference huh? Edited January 2, 2014 by oldscool
tubbs Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 great start. the more people get into these cudas, the more "little things" seem to be creeping into every build. still have to get mine.
FASTBACK340 Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) Hmmm….. we have Green, Red, Blue being built….. I love what everyone is doing with theirs….. That Hemi is begging for some loving…….I think I may be getting ready to start mine: I'm going with FM3 Edited January 2, 2014 by FASTBACK340
oldscool Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Got a little painting done today but still haven't done the body. I used almost a whole can of Tamiya bright red TS-49 just to put two coats on these parts! Got more ordered from Hobbylinc as I don't have a local source.
oldscool Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Well, since my last update I have wired the engine and done a little painting on the interior. I got some more Tamiya bright red from Hobbylinc the other day so should make some progress tomorrow.
oldscool Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) Here's the latest update. Finished the engine and got the suspension and wheels ready as well as most of the interior. The weather here just will not let me get the body painted though. Here is the stance mockup. I used the stock rear springs and the lowered front K member. Hope to have another update tomorrow. FASTBACK340 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 All these colors… wish there was a way to photograph all the high-impact colors together. Loving it….. great color choice!
robs4516 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Everything is looking really good! I think the stance is perfect.
