Zarana-X Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 These planes and armor are looking great. I haven't gotten anything done in the last 2 months due to Halloween, Wasteland, and dealing with my brother-in-law's estate. I'll be back at the bench soon. That deadline's coming fast, though. Don't know If I'll finish.
mustang1989 Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 Giver 'er a shot Jason. I've got some room to extend the CB a little.
mustang1989 Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 Well we started decaling here. Man these decals went on really well and sucked right down to the detail. and all was going well until.....................I sat back and was looking at the work. Good grief! Where do the shortcomings end with this kit? In the end its my own fault for not paying attention. Check the instruction sheet out for decal placement. See anything wrong?????? The aircraft ID numeral on the side of the fuselage is 24 WE. The wing is 14 MR. There are decals for two different aircraft on the sheet. The instructions got it wrong. The wing should be displaying 24 WE. I tried to strip the decal off but it was too well adhered down to the wing. So I cringed and painted over it. and applied the correct decal directly over it............ Looks like we're back in business! And the overhead current status pic:
mustang1989 Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 The wheel/ tire assys on this thing sucked so I robbed a kit boxing set from an Eduard Hellcat that I had (Corsairs and Hellcats shared the same wheel/ tire assys). Just an added detail step. Eduard's wheels and tires are 4 pieces but I felt they had an edge over the Revellogram parts. For one, the Eduard part doesn't look like an over inflated inner tube and secondly the wheel has cut outs for the spokes. Eduard on the left, Revellogram on the right.
mustang1989 Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Got the "Tyson Chicken Legs" on her here. Starting to wind this thing up. Gotta do some filling and sanding on the Eduard Hellcat wheel/ tire assys. Corsairs and Hellcats share the same wheels and tires so this was a no brainer to use them as the Eduard parts are far superior than the Revell supplied parts.
mustang1989 Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 (edited) Man it's gotten a little quite in here. Well I've got the wheels and tires on and made a little more progress here and there on the folded wing. I had to cut the stupid hingepoint and extend it outwards so that the wing would fold at the angle it needed to be at. Not much left now. I'm also working on a display base for it. I used a shadow box for the base, removed the glass retainers from the inside walls of the box and took out the glass, I then reinstalled the side walls and glued the cardboard base down to the side wall lip. I had a 12" x 12" mirror cut to fit and adhered that to the cardboard base and had an acrylic glass top custom made to fit over the base(I'll provide a pic of this later). Additionally I had a personalized badge made for the outside of the display base. Aside from that I'm just left with fiddly stuff to do. Aerial antenna, bombs, weathering and stuff like that. mustang1989 Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Well this puppy is now wrapped up and ready to go for my friend for Christmas. I have a few touch ups to go but nothing that'll show up in pics here. Here's the finishing shots. and a shot on the display base without the acrylic glass cover.
Lunajammer Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Boy, that came out great Joe. You sure brought as much out of that kit as you could. Just curious how you masked your canopy? I've used BMF but it left bits of adhesive behind. Trying to take that film off also started taking paint off. What's the trick?
mustang1989 Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 (edited) Thanks Mike! On this build I got lucky because the glass pieces are two separate parts with the painted windscreen brace being molded in (see pic below). I usually use BMF myself unless I can find a pre-cut mask set (which I can find for most anything but these old Monogram kits). I'll add that if any paint comes off, the airbrush takes care of that and then you can blend the paint in with either a similar shade of ground up pastel dry brushed on or cover it up with a little weathering like a wash. Ira Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 MARTIAN FLYING SAUCER! I am going to build a 9" Flying Saucer using the Dish Section of the AMT USS Yamaguchi for the main Body. I am getting Martians and other Details from the Pegasus Alpha Centauri UFO Kit. I will probably add Lights later. I just got New Decals for the Saucer. They are the aftermarket TSDS Decals for the Alpha Centauri Kit. More Coming...
mustang1989 Posted November 20, 2014 Author Posted November 20, 2014 Come on with it Ira. We'd be glad to have you in here man.
Ira Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 The Martian Underside! This is the Underside of the Dish with the underside of the UFO fit in place where it will be positioned later. I am using a 1/16th" Drill Bit to cut plastic. I will use it kind of like a router bit. I cut out most of the plastic that would have been under the UFO Underside. More Coming...
mustang1989 Posted November 20, 2014 Author Posted November 20, 2014 Cool man!! I'll get you on the build roster!
Ira Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Cool man!! I'll get you on the build roster! Thanks!
Ira Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Making More Room! I traced a top from a Spray Can on to the Top of the UFO. I am going to use the Spray Can Top for the Cockpit. Next I drew a Circle inside the traced Circle. The inside Circle is the Cut Line and the outside Circle is the Glue Line for the Cockpit. Here is the UFO Top after a rough cut out. I'll trim out the hole nice and clean with an X-Acto Knife. Then I'll sand it smooth. More Coming...

Ira Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Top Side! I traced an outline of the Spray Can Top on the Top of the Disc. Then I cut it out. Next I marked the Top of the UFO to fit down over the raised area of the Disc. I cut out the Marked area on the UFO Top and then I cut off part of the raised area to fit inside the UFO Top. Here is the UFO top in place on the Disc. More Coming...

Ira Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Where do you come up with some of this stuff Ira? You have a true gift for making things out of things that most folks don't even see coming. Thanks Joe! I spend a lot of time working with parts from different Models to see what fits together...
mustang1989 Posted November 24, 2014 Author Posted November 24, 2014 When did you start building on this level Ira? And what made you transition? Just curious.
