slusher Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I was wondering when I picked up a kit of a Diamond Reo what happened to their brand and Autocar?? I have not seen any Sterlings that took over the Ford truck line...
Jim B Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Dsimond REO ceased production of Class 8 trucks in 1995. Autocar was purcahsed by Volvo from White in 1980 and built Autocars in one form or another until about 2000. Autocar is still around (only making the Xpeditor in Highland Park, IL. Sterling was discontinued by Diamler Trucks North America in 2009.
Superpeterbilt Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Basically Diamond T and Reo were combined to be Diamond Reo. D Reo and Autocar were aquired by White, then White was aquired by Volvo. Now they just exist as garbage truck chassis. The Ford Sterlings are no connection with original Sterlings. From what I was told they were just a mixture of a bunch of random truck parts. Complete junk.
slusher Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 Thanks Guys. I am going to take a shot at building a couple trucks. I always enjoyed looking at semis on the road. I have always built cars and never a semi model...
Superpeterbilt Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Thanks Guys. I am going to take a shot at building a couple trucks. I always enjoyed looking at semis on the road. I have always built cars and never a semi model... The first kit I ever built was a Diamond Reo. Its a great kit, and Ive built a ton of them. I probably have 30 of them in my shop. My 2nd was the AMT Pete Wrecker. Its been all uphill from there. Trucks really allow you to freeform and build it however you want. There are no rules. Swap engines, sleepers, tanks, stacks, bumpers, wheels, bodies, whatever you want.
slusher Posted May 24, 2014 Author Posted May 24, 2014 I Picked up a Diamond Reo kit and a Dodge l600. Someday I will get an autocar kit. I wish they would reissue it...
Superpeterbilt Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 A few years ago they reissued the A64B kit, but those are already sky high. I would love to see the dump truck reissued, but nowadays there are many more options in resin. Good luck with your trucks.
kilrathy10 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 (edited) It'll be good to have you going after trucks, Man....I think you'll do just fine....And once you've built one, you'll be hooked.....The good thing is that the rereleases are better than the originals by way of flash and the wheels and tires are much better.....And speaking of Diamond Reos, Hobby Lobby is getting rid of them.....I bought 3 of them on clearance for $13.31 each, yesterday....I really do love Hobby Lobby.... Old Buckaroo Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 JT - what a deal. Wish I could stumble upon a deal like that. Rio's are great trucks.

I plan on going this week end. I hope they didn't sell all the Freightliner Cab Overs, I planed on getting one of them. I have a Revell Snap Pete painted and ready to build. I have some car projects going also...
clayton Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I understand the Sterling was junk. When something broke and getting parts fore it was hard.A guy here had one he would drive 100 miles start at Ford then Volvo back too Ford. then the parts store's here would spend parts of the day running parts down, because of 4 or 5 rows of serial numbers.
lapazleo Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Actually when Ford quit the heavy buisness Freightliner ended up with their cab design. The modern Sterling is a Ford cab on a Freightliner chassis. Freightliner had connections to the real Sterling from their time as part of White who aqquired the real Sterling many years ago.
