Force Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) the reference pics I have always have a glare on the glass but if it wasn't in the rules im sure it isn't there.how close is the chassis in the original kit compared to the real car?i fount this pick of grumpys Camaro.it shows bars down the middle of the tubs but im not sure how it ties into th rear hoop....in the second pic it shows two bars coming down from the cener of the hoop but not in the first pic. The Pro Stock race cars were built by several chassis builders so there may be differences in the construction from car to car and year to year, the car in your first picture is the Wayne County Speed Shop Camaro driven by Darrell Alderman but the second is "Grumpy" Jenkins car with Joe Lepone Jr as driver. I know for sure the Reher-Morrison car was built by Don Ness Racecraft and he kit was as far as I know patterned after the 1982-83 Reher-Morrison car. The kit was originally issued by Monogram in 1984 together with the Frank Iaconio car and was the first in the series of "modern era" Pro Stock kits, so the first issue should be quite accurate. Some alterations of the tooling has been made for the later Firebird kits from 1991 and 1999, so the newly reissued kit isn't the exactly the same as the first issue, but I looked at the instructions on the Revell site and other than the drivers side of the cage with the "red bar" and some altered padding the cage is the same as in the first issue. The padding on the first issue drivers side part of the cage is on the upper side cross bar from where the cross bars meet and up to the vertical bar behind the seat, and the lower cross bar has padding from the cross down to where it meets the seat...that's it, nothing on the main hoop or anywhere else. Another thing missing from the first issue is the Moroso valve covers. Edited July 24, 2014 by Force
Petetrucker07 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) Those down bars between the tubs should go to the chassis somewhere between the rear end and the end of chassis, kinda like the bars that go through the fire wall to the chassis in front of the upper a-arm mount, those bars come from the bar that goes from the upper halo down by the dash to the floor. This post is gonna be very helpful. I recently picked up the 1st issue of this car, ALMOST considered bashing it, then i realized i should build it, just how it was intended. Ill be following and watching this 1 progress. Edited July 24, 2014 by Petetrucker07
lou s Posted July 27, 2014 Author Posted July 27, 2014 here is a mock up of the direction i think im going to go.dew to lack of references out there ill go by what i can see and fake the rest.if you look at the pics of the first car it shows some of the bars are exposed and the rest are covered with panels.in the second pic the reher Morrison car. i zoomed in and the chassis looks alot like the chassis of the first car......ill have to scrap the idea to open the trunk because i don't know what it looks like.......the bars of the mock up are not set but you can get an idea of where im going with it.......lets here the pros and cons.thanks
crowe-t Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Great job so far on the cage! It looks like it does in the pictures of the real car.
NJJeff Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 does anyone know what this set up in this pic is called.rb motion used to sell them on his site but there not on his page anymore.its the valve cover air breather attacked with a tube to the bottom of the header. Like Force said, it's a scavenging system to allow blowby gases out of the crankcase using the exhaust. There's also a one-way valve on each header collector to prevent exhaust from entering the hoses.
SlotDaddy1963 Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 I could be wrong, but IIRC the March, 1985 accident that took the life of Lee Shepard in Ardmore, Oklahoma was one of the reasons that NHRA mandated the use of the "Funny-Car" styled cage sections that now surround the driver. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny this but that's what I remember happening at the time. So, I think that bar hadn't been thought of yet for the car your replicating. And it wasn't in Monogram's original kit either.
am73grand Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 This is looking really good. Looking forward to seeing more!
lou s Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 (edited) thank you all for the help so far.....no new pics but im working on finishing the chassis suspention parts.how does the wheelie bars attack to the suspention in this car.is it to the 4 link or is it attached to the rear end like in this pic of an 83 Camaro. Petetrucker07 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 (edited) Ill try to find a pic Edited July 30, 2014 by Petetrucker07
lou s Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 (edited) wow that was quick.sorry I forgot to post pic but I got an answer before I got it up.so here it is anyway.......thanks a pic would be great. Edited July 30, 2014 by lou s
Petetrucker07 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 (edited) It looks like it mounts basically the same. The 4 link brackets are used for the lower cross bar, in all the pics ive seen so far Edited July 30, 2014 by Petetrucker07
lou s Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 just a little update.i got my rims from micro nitro and the rest of my parts .scotts tires look great with these rims.not only is his stuff graet he has the fastest shipping ive seen.im trying to use as many aftermarket parts from as many makers as I can.they deserve to be shown off for what they add to the modeling community........right or wrong this is the finished chassis.......here is a pic of the header ive been messing around with.painted with buffing aluminum.heat stained with Tamiya powders and given a black wash......the manifold was also sprayed with aluminum buffinf and given a black was.i also put a coat of future on it to see if it would look like polishes aluminum.its kind of an experiment.if it doesn't look right ill strip it and alclad it so tell me what you think.
am73grand Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Love this build. It's really coming along nicely!
crowe-t Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) The chassis looks fantastic and the finish on the headers and intake looks real!!! Excellent work! Mike. Edited August 5, 2014 by crowe-t
futurattraction Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Your headers look fantastic, Lou. I don't think they could look any more realistic...
lou s Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) I had to rework the dash filling in the holes were the kit chassis bars went through it.i also put end plates on because the doors will be open and you could see under the dash..........I sanded of the molded in gauges. cut a piece of aluminum sheet to fit and sprayed it anodized blue.put in slixx decals.cut aluminum rod for gauge bazels and topped it off with pro teck bolt heads.....sorry pics are dark Edited August 5, 2014 by lou s
crowe-t Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Lou, Great work on the dash! The gauges look like the real thing. BTW, is that a picture of the actual Reher Morrison car's interior? Mike.
1 bad55 stan Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 As mentioned those headers look great. Can you tell me how you got the "welded" look on them? This is a very interesting build by the way. Thanks Stan...
