Toast Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 (edited) I started a die cast project a while back and have already done some styrene bodywork. I was wondering if a coat of self etching primer over the whole body will it have any adverse effects on the styrene and putty. Any advice about working with the combination of these materials is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Edited January 12, 2008 by Toast
Mike Kucaba Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 I've used DuPont Vari-prime for a while and I don't see why you should have any problems. It won't hurt the styrene and it was really made to work with metal.Did you use the Dupli-Color brand in the aerosol?
Toast Posted January 12, 2008 Author Posted January 12, 2008 Yeah, after stripping the original paint I hit it with a coat of Duplicolor sandable primer to keep the metal from tarnishing while I worked on it. After reading up on how to properly prepare metal for paint, I doubt that primer will hold up by itself.
Zoom Zoom Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 You'll probably be okay, but it would have been much better for paint adhesion if the etching primer were put down on the metal first. Not sure if the etchant will actually get much of a chance to grip the metal if you started w/a coat of regular primer. Beware of chipping paint, more likely than the etching primer causing problems with what's on there already.

I've used self-etch primer with perfect results not only on diecast, but over putty and styrene, both with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I recommend it. Biscuitbuilder
