am73grand Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 (edited) I have wanted to build this car for a VERY long time but had no luck finding a reasonably priced Hornet. Thanks to some diligent searching and being in the right place at the right time I picked this bad boy up for an EXCELLENT price: This body is NOT RESIN. It is an original JoHan Hornet funny car body! It took forever to strip that yellow paint off. but It's pretty clean now. I cut open the hood and hatch and the doors will be next. I'll be using this as a fill in while I wrap up the Malibu. I need to order some parts before I can go much further anyway. Thanks for looking!! Edited February 7, 2015 by am73grand
Daddyfink Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 So, what are your plans for the old Hornets chassis?
am73grand Posted July 26, 2014 Author Posted July 26, 2014 So, what are your plans for the old Hornets chassis? Jesse it is already gone. Sold it to a buddy.
Tedly Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 This is a great project! Can't wait to see it finished. I did a Maskin & Kanners Hornet pro stocker using a promo. That was before resin was available.
Dragfreak Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 This ought to be neat, I can't believe how fast you work, you've finished 3 so far while I've been working on the mustang
am73grand Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Thanks everyone! Jason, I am lucky in that I get an hour a day at my bench. Those hours add up fast and allow me to finish builds pretty regularly! I've also got a '68 Dart, Volvo Wagon and Dodge Challenger in line for the drag treatment. Hopefully I get them all finished this year!!
am73grand Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 I've started laying this one out. I'm not sure of a color combo yet but I'm thinking flames......perhaps red white and blue flames on a black car..........we'll see what happens. I started on the outlaw style hood. It's a scoop off a Revell Nova with some extra meat added to the bottom. The front will be a challenge. Here is the start of the engine. That's a modified Jukebox Ford tranny and oil pan. The strips coming off the pan are my new flange. I started on the front frame. I'll be painting the floor and cage different colors on this one. This one may sit so low I need to add clearance in the front fenders. Thanks for looking!!!
DrKerry Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 You go Ron!!!! I started a Hornet Pro Mod myself. Not the one your doing just a what if type build.. ..But then I got side tracked!!!!
1 bad55 stan Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Looks good so far Ron.Do you have any problems with the front of the frame?I find mine keep braking away from the fire wall, any hints would be great..

Thanks Stan. I have had problems with the frame breaking off the firewall myself. Most of the time I build the floor/chassis/cage as a single unit. In that case, good old fashioned Testors liquid cement welds the cage to the firewall. When I paint the frame/cage and floor separate I super glue the cage to the firewall at final assembly. I usually hide the joint under the cowl of whatever car I'm building. That way it can be a little messy but a nice solid joint.
AZ Boy Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Nice progress, Ron. I like the unusual, and a Hornet promod is certainly that!
1 bad55 stan Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Cheers Ron,My capri build has stalled because it keeps breaking,Thanks for your advice...
am73grand Posted August 1, 2014 Author Posted August 1, 2014 Sanded a lot of that bondo off the hood and here's where I am at. I want a HUGE wing on the back of this thing but I'm not sure how I'm going to pull it off. Stay tuned as the build continues!!!
