tubbs Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 can anyone tell me what this is? I have seen it a thousand times but cannot come up with a description. even google didn't help me out. thanks in advance.
highway Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 If I remember correctly, it was one of those cartoonish kits of a semi doing burnouts.
Guest Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Some people refer to Ford's 429 Boss as a semi Hemi whatever that's supposed to mean.
Brizio Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 This? http://www.tomdaniel.com/85_kits/85_kits_pages/hemi_semi.html
tubbs Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) if you go to this site.... http://www.cars-on-line.com/update405/update405.html you will notice on the front fender it says "427 semi-hemi" on the front fender of this Chevy II..... why? if you click on the blue letters in the story "semi-hemi" they don't tell you squat. Greg Myers Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 BIG Block Chevy http://vintage-nitro.com/the-porcupine-semi-hemi-mystery-rat-motor/
tubbs Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 so, not all big block Chevys' are known as "semi-hemi's". as I figured, it was the porcupine V8. the cylinder heads had domed pistons but the spark plug was located in the normal chevy location.... am I close? BIG Block Chevy http://vintage-nitro.com/the-porcupine-semi-hemi-mystery-rat-motor/ oh yea, thanks. interesting reading.
Snake45 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I too have seen the BB Chev referred to as a "semi-hemi" many times. Since both "semi" and "hemi" mean half (so does "demi"), I guess that means the BB Chevy is one-quarter...of something.
Jim Whalen Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I remember a '57 Chevy pro-mod running on the European circuit a few years ago that the commentators referred to its engine as being a semi-hemi. It was my understanding that the car had a BBC with custom hemi heads on it - I never got a close look up at the engine so I am not sure where the spark plugs were. I guess you could also refer to a flathead with the Ardun hemi head set-up on it as a semi-hemi as well.
Longbox55 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I guess you could also refer to a flathead with the Ardun hemi head set-up on it as a semi-hemi as well. No, Ardun heads were true hemi heads. The "semi-hemi" term with BB Chevrolets comes from them having canted valves, similar to a hemi head engine, but they do not have the semi-spherical combustion chambers that are found on true hemi head engines.
tooltas Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 sonny's racing engine or nick arias has them for truckpuller guys
1930fordpickup Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I have heard of the 427 SOHC Ford and the Boss 429 Ford called this by the Chrysler guys around here. Maybe it is just a thing they do here. I will say that I have a Chevy II with 427 SOHC in it , but it is a glue bomb after all . Not an accurate example. I have never heard of any stock Chevy called a Semi Hemi .
Skip Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 I remember hearing that term referring to the BB Chev, I also remember seeing Semi-Hemi on cars in a few of the old Hot Rod magazines. I have the March 1966 issue of Hot Rod, the article referenced is pretty interesting. I always wondered if the AMT AWB Chevy II was loosely based on the Bill Mitchell Kit. The article shows them unbolting and rolling the entire Chevy II front end rolling it away from the rest of the car. That was back when Hot Rod was filled with great articles from cover to cover.
