Tesla Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I was wondering how PlastiKote paints and primers are compared to Duplicolor?
Erik Smith Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Paint is as good - nozzles on cans suck. The PK can I have used end up getting a lot of build up on the nozzle and clogged.

Ace-Garageguy Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Lotta guys used to seem to prefer PlastiKote primers, but then it seemed to get a little harder to find. I switched to Duplicolor primers and noticed only minor differences, but now I've found a source for PlastiKote again I'm doing some back-to-back testing. I like the Duplicolor colors I've recently used immensely, and I've liked the PlastiKote colors I've used in the past. In my particular market, the PlastiKote displays are much more limited in color selection than Duplicolor.

StevenGuthmiller Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I've checked literally every auto parts store in my area For Plasticoat primer to no avail. I would like to give it a try. I like Duplicolor primer except for one aspect. It doesn't cover worth a spit!! Especially the white! I use Squadron Green putty & have sprayed more than 5 coats of Duplicolor white, & can still see the putty through the primer! painting over a body molded in color is an exercise in futility! I resorted a long time ago to spraying a coat of Testors gray over the body after prep, followed by at least one coat of Testors white primer if I need a lighter base, & then several coats of Duplicolor white to give a nice smooth finish. I don't really like the Testors primers that much, (too thick & don't dry as smooth as Duplicolor, plus it doesn't give you nearly as good of a barrier when you're painting with automotive lacquers) but it does cover! I'm getting ready to try Tamiya primer now for the first time, but at $13.00 a pop, I'm not sure how much of that I'll use. Steve
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) I've checked literally every auto parts store in my area For Plasticoat primer to no avail. The only one here (Atlanta area) to have it is CarQuest. CarQuest in AZ had it too, last time I was out there. Amazon has it, and shipping is free for orders over $35, so if you're shopping for something else... PS. I usually finish my bodywork with Duplicolor high-build (scratch-filler) sandable primer, then shoot one coat of the white thin stuff over that if I need a light color to pop. Cato Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I like Duplicolor primer except for one aspect. It doesn't cover worth a spit!! I know this is a Plasti-kote question but I can't get it locally unless I mail order it. I have been using the Duplicolor system for some time and although I like it, I agree with your comment about primer. My method is to work the bare plastic with sanding and Bondo filler, prime, then sand. I sand in grits to 600, which gives a nice flat layer of primer. However two medium coats of the (gray) primer will leave faint pink Bondo areas showing through. So I have to add more coats of primer just to hide, even when I have a perfect surface and don't want further thickness.

It covers very well in one coat & gives you a good surface So you can see where you need more body work. But then you need something to cover the Testors primer because it doesn't work well with autmotive lacquer paints. Duplicolor gray covers fine, but it's very dark gray, so if you need a lighter base you're SOL because the Duplicolor white primer doesn't cover. It's kind of a vicious cycle. Steve

I will go over it in a light coat of Tamiya fine white only if I need it under a bright top color. I like the compatibility of Dupli colors over their own primer. I think we each have good methods.

Cato Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 How well does the Tamiya white cover the Duplicolor gray? Steve One mist and one medium. I like to keep primers and color as thin as possible. I go wet coats of clear to cut with cloths.
Dave Van Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Dupli-color all the way here.....never have an issue with Gray primer sealer covering ANYTHING!

Gray & red are ok, white is terrible for coverage, but pretty nice otherwise. Wish I could still find the yellow stuff! I loved that!! Steve
