Snake45 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I bought this kit from a collector/dealer in 1969 for the outrageous price of $5.00. And built it. If Revell hadn’t come out with a new one, I’d seriously consider stripping it down to bare plastic and rebuilding it, but I prefer to keep it as a relic of my youth. Paint was AMT Candy Gold Base with AMT Clear Gloss lacquer topcoat. It has some (many) flaws but it’s better than some stuff I built back in the day. Sorry about the sucky pics. It actually looks a little better than the photos—for some reason my camera’s flash was only working on a random basis the other day, and some of these pics have been “pushed” in photoshop, which makes it look like there’s a lot of dust in or on the finish. Oh yeah there’s SOME dust in the paint, but not what it looks like in some of the pics. Wheels and tires are from some 1969 kit—I think maybe the AMT Chevelle SS396. This is a true “restoration.” I disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled everything, and did a little bit of touchup here and there (silver Sharpie on the wheel opening trim, etc.), But didn’t really change anything. Oh yeah, I did lower the rear end a little—I thought by today’s standards I’d jacked the assend up just a bit too much. Oh, and I carefully trimmed the “hinges” on the hood so it would fit the opening a little better. Here it is with the reissued '67 I built in the early '90s.
Snake45 Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Here are some pics comparing the Revell body. The old MPC really stands up shape-wise, and the thinner headlight bezels are actually MORE accurate than the newer Revell kit's. Strange but true. The old MPC had no provisions for taillights, just their louvers, so I hand-painted them on at the time.
wrecker388 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Looks good! My mom's first car was a 66 Goat, so I have a soft spot for these.
atomicholiday Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) Very cool! That stands up to about anything being built today and yet still looks vintage (a good thing in my opinion). I have a couple from my youth I need to restore, but nothing this nice. Edited January 4, 2015 by atomicholiday
oldscool Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Nice one Snake. It looks exactly as it should for the time period that you built it in. My teenage years were full of models that looked just about the same.
Erik Smith Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Pretty nice build for being over 40 years old. $5.00 back in '69 was an expensive kit!
bbowser Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 A treasured "blast from the past". Both of them illustrate nice clean work!
Snake45 Posted January 5, 2015 Author Posted January 5, 2015 A treasured "blast from the past". Both of them illustrate nice clean work! I'll try to get the '67 posted sometime soon.
bobthehobbyguy Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Nice. Glad to see you preserve it by restoring rather than redo it.
RAMBENNA Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I really like it looks great and love the gold color
Snake45 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 Nice. Love the "look" of the wheels/tires. That combo still works to this day, doesn't it?
Bob Ellis Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I think the old MPC, AMT and Johan kits got the shapes correct. Some might argue that they are les detailed. If you detail them well, they look as good as the new kits.
Snake45 Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Nice one Snake. It looks exactly as it should for the time period that you built it in. My teenage years were full of models that looked just about the same. Most of mine built about the same time looked similar. I still have many of them. Some have been stripped for rebuilding, but some are just as I built them, and I hope to "restore" a few more of them very soon. Might try to do one this weekend, if I get the time and the mood strikes me.
Curt Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Yes, very nice work for '69, Snake. I had nothing back then that was that cleanly built.
