mnwildpunk Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I traded a set of cylinder heads for a 1971 ford galaxie 500 today. Minus engine the body is nice and I'm not sure of the transmission. But its in the car no clue if its good. What engines came in it and any other facts you can give Wikipedia did give me much for the 1971
chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I'm envious of that car... http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/ford_usa/full-size_ford_8gen/full-size_ford_8gen_galaxie_500_4-door_hardtop/1971.html
Fat Brian Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 This site gives all of the engine and transmission combos from the straight six manual to the 429 four barrel auto. http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/ford_usa/full-size_ford_8gen/full-size_ford_8gen_galaxie_500_2-door_hardtop/1971.html
my80malibu Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 (edited) Copy the Vin tag Info, and contact Your local Ford dealer. That should help with some, if not all of Your questions. Dave You didn't indicate what type of transmission You have, Automatic ,or Manual. Edited January 16, 2015 by my80malibu
mnwildpunk Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Thx Gabriel great idea ill e-mail ford
mnwildpunk Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Oh its an auto id rather have an manual but it only cost me a set of cylinder heads I wasn't using so I can't complain at all I'll have pix soon as we get sun in the great white Northern Minnesota
mnwildpunk Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Another up side for a family guy like me is its a four door
1930fordpickup Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Dave I think that the trans bellhousing is different from big block Ford to Small block Ford. My guess is it was a 390. Gramps had a 73 two door with a 400 in it. I was told for an old man car it was fast. LOL He was driving a 64 with a 427 in it before that.
mnwildpunk Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 (edited) I need to run the VIN as Gabriel suggested first. Once I find a motor which the motor mounts look like a V-8 but I'm not sure? Next thing is to repaint it from the vomit green terrible paint job someone put on it but the body is solidmy magnet stuck everywhere I put it and I am happy even If I just have it sitting in the back yard and I pretend I'm Gator McClusky or just flip it Edited January 16, 2015 by mnwildpunk
blunc Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 this site lists most if not all specs for your Ford: http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/ford_usa/full-size_ford_8gen/full-size_ford_8gen_galaxie_500_4-door_hardtop/1971.html

sjordan2 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Be prepared to find this subject moved into the Q&A section.
mnwildpunk Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 351 Windsor 2 barrel carb oh darn lol well at least it wasn't a straight six
62rebel Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 i'd hazard a guess that not one single Galaxie 500 made it off the line with a six. the Custom series, yes, but not the flagship series. nothing stopping you from putting any v8 combo in it from a 302 to a 460 if you can find a donor. curious; what cylinder heads did you trade?
mnwildpunk Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Nope I can't do that to the car it looks like the ugly girl at prom Id rather show pix of her once she became the bombshell at the reunion. Remember I got it for only a set of cylinder head which sat on my shelves for 10 yrs
chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 A car with potential is never ugly! Still, have fun with it.
mnwildpunk Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Maybe? not sure what to do with it the wife will make me make a decision I'm guessing by spring fix up or sell it. again im. guessing sell because I got four in front of it
mnwildpunk Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) She wants the 68 super bee to be her car (fat chance) and I want to keep and restore my high school 87 camaro then there is my 1947 chevy pick-up. I been working on for over a decade. If that isnt enough I then have a 55 packard I haven't touched since I bought it in 98-00 and now a 71 galaxie. Out of the cars I own I have three good ones my 98 Lesabre my 51 dodge and the 07 camry. One restored out of the sh** I bought sold or traded I think I'm doing ok lol Edited January 17, 2015 by mnwildpunk
freakshow12 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 You sound a lot like me! I have stuff I think I will get to at some point. My wife sees it differently. Lol
mnwildpunk Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Darn wives my collection would much bigger if it wasn't for her well maybe she is a good thing LOL
my80malibu Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 If the transmission has a removable bell housing its an FMX trans, ford used 3 transmissions during that time small blocks used C-4. big blocks used a C-6. Intermediate used FMX.which is a C-6 with interchangeable bell housing to fit all engines.
