I am fascinated by this Brown family and how they are trying to live. Some say 'they are actors" others say "they are for real" Do I believe that this a "true' story or just a scripted TV show. The more I watch the more I think it is scripted. What do you think ?

My take is that all reality shows are at least somewhat scripted. They all follow the same formulas pretty much. There's the domineering matriarch/patriarch. The "bad guy/gal", the continuous drama (machinery fails, personality conflicts, etc. Reboot.

It's "fake" and even Gold Rush is scripted but I enjoy watching it as I was in Alaska last summer. I could never live "off grid" as they don't have newspaper or pizza delivery out in the wilderness.

I haven't seen Alaskan Bush People yet. I wasn't into the commercials for the series.

I do watching people live lives very different from my own. I watch Yukon Men and think life in places like Tanana, Alaska is interesting. I cannot fathom going out to check my trap lines in -40 degree weather, and camping out there!

The other show that's interesting is Alaska: The Last Frontier with the Kilcher family. Funny thing is that when I just went to look them up to get the series name, it seems that Atz is worth $5 million, while Otto is worth $4 million. Probably the value of all that land. Still it's mildly amusing to watch them skin a bear.

The big one I can't figure out. Alaska State Troopers... why the heck are these guys driving Crown Vics on snow and ice? I'd think the standard vehicle would be a 4 wheel drive.

They're Alaskan bush people as much as I'm an Aborigine.

Well- Jewel, the well-known singer, is from the same family. One of those guys with the weird first name on the show is her father. But if they've got that kind of money and still live even 10% of the way they appear to on TV, props to them.

There is nothing on TV without a script of some kind. Besides all these people use the same speech pattern from the NY bikers to the Alaskan Frontier group. How is that ?

They're not scripted per se, but they are directed. They are given a plot point and situational conditions and encouraged to keep it lively, then let the personalities do the rest. True that on the speech patterns. I believed they are coached there too so they're not as droll as they would be if left to their own natural deliveries.

There's too much at risk when doing a TV show to leave things too much to chance.

I dunno.... "Amish Mafia" has GOT to be scripted. :)

There was an Amish Mafia marathon on a while back. I caught about 1/2 an episode by mistake. I then found myself watching about 4 more just to see if it really was that stupid. Turns out it was.

It's so lame, it's ALMOST entertaining.

I tried to give Bush People a chance. I put on episode 1 on demand and couldn't take it. I had to turn it off. Definitely not my cup of tea. I'll stick with Gold Rush. It may be set up to a point, but by far more believable.

I think they are ALL set up. Just a matter if you to or do not find each show interesting. Even American Pickers has a script to a point. I still like to watch it just to see some cool items.

Actual documentaries are the only "reality" shows. But those are boring and nobody wants to watch them. So, you take a real situation, coach the cast a little, and edit for drama to make it "edgy" and "captivating" or whatever watchword TV execs use to make it exciting.

Good point. The editing of the reality shows is as much a character of the story telling as the actors. Even if it's editing in reactions and looks that were filmed out of context. Add some jitter cam for excitement, and some melodramatic music sounds and you got yer self a bonafide reality show.

In the vein of Alaska themed reality shows, did anyone else watch Alaska Off-Road Warriors? I'm still trying to figure out how Team Rover came back with a new rig!
