restoman Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 This is going to be my first full-on custom build... Starting with Revell's Street Machine kit. My plan is for a lot of work... top chop, shorten the body, custom built pick-up box, lots of trim shaving, Fuch-style wheels, etc... hopefully ending up with something that looks like pic #2. Thinking about the same colour too.
restoman Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 This is a really rough body. lots of flashing, sunken areas, mis-matched mold seams... First order is to get rid of those fender flares and get the wheel openings looking a little better. Some plastic is going to be needed to get the front view better.
cobraman Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 That is really cool. I hope you can pull it off.
Lowlife ! ! Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Cool, you got my attention.... Love the pickup that's a really unusual idea for a bug, ( cant help wondering if you might be better off starting with the Tamiya beetle kit, its a lot nicer than those Revell versions...) good luck with it anyway, im gonna be watching along ! ! Lowlife ! !
Snake45 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Very interesting! I recently ran across a pic of one of these in an old Rod & Custom magazine and have been thinking of building one myself. I'll be following this build. Model on!
Snake45 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 BTW, I think the proportions would look better unchopped, but of course it's your model.
Zarana-X Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Good luck. The OLD Revell VW kits are pretty rough. I remember seeing pics of that car before, including the build, I think he used the back of a Ford truck cab, but its been a few years...
Atmobil Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Cool project, the old 1:25 Revell kit is quite rough, especially in its later reissues, but it can build up quite nicely if you do your work on it. I built this from it: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=96447&hl= I think I would keep the roof unchopped for better proportions but that's me
Twokidsnosleep Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 that is really cool I like that there is a real version to go from
restoman Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Spent an hour or so on it today... so far, so good. Now, the roof looks really high! A chop is a must!
wayne swayze Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Verrrry interesting! It's a very cool idea. Love the real vehicle! Hope you pull this off.
southpier Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 you've got the start of a great 5-window cab - just sayin'. . .
Frankenstyrene Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Great idea for a build. You can go see the full size build on volksrod.com. Pretty cool.
Eric Macleod Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Neat. This is going to be very interesting. I like the 5 window cab idea! E-
rsxse240 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 you've got the start of a great 5-window cab - just sayin'. . . I was thinking the very same. I love the idea! Can't wait to see more. I may take the idea and do the same with some bugs I have laying around.

restoman Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 Spent some time mocking up the engine and transaxle to determine the stance. I think I'll end up sticking with a slightly lower than stock height. it's an awful lot of work to alter the chintzy suspension that's on this kit. Also mocked up a box to get an idea of how much to take out of the roof height. Going to shorten the box slightly and lower the top rails a touch. Beetle rear fenders are going on the box.
