SpreadAxle Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) Back in '08 I finished this truck. It's the latest issue of the Astro kit and I painted it to match the boxart. DupliColor GM 302. The kit was modified with working steering, some engine and air brake plumbing, working cab lift cylinders, 3 windows on the rear wall, and some other small items. Moving, along with other factors, caused the truck to fall into a sad state of disrepair. I started rebuilding it, but shelved it for awhile. It's time to finish it. The pix with the blue cab are the original build. The white cab is the rebuild. Much of the work I have left involves finishing and mounting the cab. I cut down the optional round tanks included in the kit and used them to replace the large square tanks I originally used. For a daycab, the square tanks seemed too large. They will be painted black. I also dechromed items like the bumper, Luberfiner and other items to go with a fleet look. I'll post more progress as I go and I hope to finish it soon. Thanks for looking Edited July 17, 2015 by SpreadAxle Quote
tbill Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 looking good [in both versions], looking forward to seeing the restoration. Quote
Old Buckaroo Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Fantastic looking Astro. Good to see this one getting another chance. Really like the back window setup ! Quote
trick my mixer Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Yes, the windows do add a nice touch to it. Quote
SpreadAxle Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) I may as well include the trailer.I started this quite some time ago and never really had time to proceed with it. I figured this would make the perfect trailer for this truck. It's the AMT Trailmobile doubles kit with the bodies from both trailers sectioned together to make a 40 foot trailer. Everything you need to do it is in the box minus the tandem suspension. Edited March 11, 2015 by SpreadAxle Quote
cowboy rich Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 The truck looks good. Wish I would have thought of that combo of trailers for mine but parts are lost in weather. Looks great I like it... Ok I'm rambling Rich Quote
Tesla Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 The rear window mods nice. Looking forward to this restoration. Quote
Jonj238 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Nice, I'll be watching this one. Chevy and GMC made a nice looking truck back then. Quote
SpreadAxle Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 Just quick shot of the interior. I modified it by adding the trailer brake handle and a tachograph cut from a spare International 4270 dashboard that I had. Quote
SpreadAxle Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) I'm so very close to being done so I figured I would post a quick mockup. All that's left is to actually mount the cab(just sitting on frame for pix), and do some final detailing and touch up. Edited March 23, 2015 by SpreadAxle Quote
kilrathy10 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 That looks pretty darned good.....Nice work..... Quote
SpreadAxle Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Here are some in-progress pix of the cab lift cylinders. They were made from K and S brass and aluminum tube. The kit has lift cylinders which aren't operable. I used the kit parts as a guide for mounting. Quote
gatorincebu Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Ray, The rebuild is looking really good. I like the rear windows. As for the trailer, you do have the suspension if you run a spread axle set up! ?? be Well Gator Quote
Brinx Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Great looking rig Ray....nice work on the rear windows. I think the re-hab looks fantastic! Quote
Goodwrench3 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Just quick shot of the interior. I modified it by adding the trailer brake handle and a tachograph cut from a spare International 4270 dashboard that I had. That gauge panel is amazing !!! Did you hand paint all of it ??!!? Quote
SpreadAxle Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) gatormarc, using the suspension for both trailers I think you could set up a spreadaxle suspension if you wanted to try this trailer stretch out for yourself. Edited March 26, 2015 by SpreadAxle Quote
SpreadAxle Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) Thanks Goodwrench. I did hand paint all of it.It took a little time, and a handful of toothpicks. Edited March 26, 2015 by SpreadAxle Quote
